Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the Civil Services Examination 2026 notification for 979 vacancies across IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, and other central services. Applications opened in January 2026 with Prelims on 24 May 2026. This is India's most prestigious and competitive examination — cracking IAS takes years of dedicated preparation but opens doors to some of the highest offices in the country. Graduates with any discipline are eligible, with an age limit of 21 to 32 years. Fee: ₹100 for General; nil for SC/ST/Female/PH.

Selection Process — 3 Stages
- •Stage 1 — Prelims: Two papers — GS Paper I (200 marks) + CSAT Paper II (200 marks, qualifying). Only GS Paper I marks count for cut-off.
- •Stage 2 — Mains (Written): 9 Papers — 2 Qualifying language papers + 7 Merit papers (Essay, GS I-IV, Optional I & II). Total merit marks: 1,750.
- •Stage 3 — Personality Test (Interview): 275 marks before UPSC board.
Total merit: Mains (1,750) + Interview (275) = 2,025 marks. Prelims is only qualifying.
Important Notes for Aspirants
- •Optional subject selection is critical — choose based on your graduation background and available study material.
- •Current Affairs from last 12 months is crucial for Prelims GS Paper I.
- •CSAT (Paper II) is qualifying — need 33% (66/200) — don't ignore it completely.
- •Mains answer writing practice is as important as content knowledge.
IAS gets highest priority in merit list — then IPS, IFS, IRS in order of preference.
